Reading the responses was enlightening and made me feel more in touch with the Maine collective artistic mindset. I will be sending it out again in the next newsletter and publishing some results soon.
Almost forgot! Victor Hathaway and I will be starting up the Cafe des Artistes radio show this coming Memorial Day Weekend on "Saturday Moring Coffee House" at 8:30 on WERU 89.9-FM and streaming live on weru.org. You will always be able to hear a podcast of the show here on the Cafe blog. Let me know of events you would like publicized.

Thanks to Anina Porter Fuller, each summer since 1993, a group of 12 artists have spent a week exploring the artistic process on GSHI. The Island has been the summer home of the Porter Family for over a century and is where Fairfield Porter painted and Eliott Porter photographed. The GSHI show presents work of artists who have participated in art week. This year the artists represented are Marcia Stremlau, Anina Fuller, others to be announced. Portland Galleries change locations
The Daniel Kany Gallery on Exchange Street occupied by Aucocisco Gallery. The Daniel Kany Gallery will reopen for the June First Friday Art Walk at 24 Romasco Lane in Portland – along with the Portland Glassblowing Studio and the hot shop of glass artist Ben Coombs. This article also announced gallery artist Dozier Bell receiving the Adolf & Esther Gottlieb Individual Artist Grant as well! Celebrating 10 years at 244 York Street, York, Maine, the Village Gallery will have an anniversary party on May 22, 5-8 PM. Aaron T. Stephan’s sculpture, titled Boom, will be Maine’s largest public art commission to date. The 65-foot high sculpture, composed of 10 crane booms radiating from a central pillar, has been commissioned with private funds in memory of Portland businessman P.D. Merill and will be donated to the city of Portland. Aaron will speak about his inspirations for the work, the unique process involved, and the work’s importance to Maine’s communities. don’t miss this sneak preview of a work of art that is sure to have a major impact on Portland’s image as a vibrant arts community.

David Lyman, founder of The Maine Photographic Workshops and Rockport College, will deliver his historically effective lecture on the creative mind at The Cider Barn at Carver Hill Gallery on Friday evening, May 15, from 7 to 9 PM. An optional supper of soup, bread and wine begins at 6 PM and will kick off an evening of discussions, questions and sharing on the creative process. This lecture, which David has been delivering for more than 30 years, is a sampling of a more comprehensive, all day workshop to be held on the same weekend, Sunday, May 17 from 10 – 5:00.
David’s lectures and workshops have inspired and changed the lives of countless numbers of photographers, filmmakers, writers and visual artists who have attended The Workshops (now Maine Media), over the past three decades.

Carver Hill Gallery in Rockport and VoxPhotographs of Belfast and Portland announced the opening of MID-COAST CHROMA: Six Maine Fine Art Photographers: Susan Guthrie, Cig Harvey, T. Jackson MacC, Jim Nickelson, Liv Kristin Robinson, and Sarah. All of the fine art photographers in the show work in color.

Historical Native American Artwork Highlighted in Maine's Capital
Artwork created to raise awareness of ancient Passamaquoddy rock carvings, possibly dating back as far as 10,000 years, is now on display throughout Maine's Capitol complex. The Equinox Project, that features works from 22 women artists, native and non-native, and over 30 Passamaquoddy children from Pleasant Point and Indian Township schools, is touring the state to increase awareness of Passamaquoddy culture.
In October of 2006, one of the most sacred and well-documented sites of ancient petroglyphs on the eastern seaboard of the United States was returned to its original peoples, the Passamaquoddy Tribe. The site is known as "Picture Rocks" and lies on the Machias Bay in Downeast Maine. The rock carvings and peckings date as far back as 3,000 to 5,000 years and its most ancient peckings may be as old as 10,000 years. Believed to be made by Shamans, the petroglyphs are positioned in a way that makes them most visible at the fall or spring equinox. FMI, www.MaineArts.com.

On Saturday, May 23, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., the public is welcome to preview the 2009 Island Journal, the Island Institute’s celebrated yearly magazine of island life and to raise a glass in tribute to Andrew Wyeth, “a man who loved islands” This year’s expanded edition, entitled Island Journal: Waypoints 1984-2009, includes an extraordinary folio of his island work. serves as juror for "New American Paintings"
George Kinghorn, Director of the University of Maine Museum of Art, was invited to serve as juror of the 81st edition of the national publication "New American Paintings" that will be released at major booksellers such as Borders and Barnes and Noble later this week. "New American Paintings" is a juried art exhibition in print that surveys the finest contemporary painters working in a wide range of styles from abstract to representational. Kinghorn reviewed over 800 artist submissionsand selected the 40 painters to be featured in the publication. „This was a most rewarding project which allowed me to view an enormous amount of exceptional art. It was a daunting task to select only 40 artists for the publication” said Kinghorn. Kinghorn is the first Director and Curator from a Maine museum to be invited to serve as juror of the publication.
